How to Measure Onchain Growth Correctly

TL;DR: Onchain growth is not a wallet-count chart. Measure whether relevant entities activate, return and create economic value, then expose the concentration and incentive effects behind the total.
The address count is not the answer
In a private analysis of the top 100 pools on a Solana concentrated-liquidity DEX, fewer than 1% of LP wallets controlled roughly 82% of the cohort's TVL. More than 18 wallets belonged to one automated-vault entity. The address-level data was correct, but it did not answer the leadership question about liquidity resilience.
That is the starting point for growth measurement. Label active addresses as active addresses. Do not let them become active users, diversified capital or durable adoption without the modelling needed to support that claim.
Measure four layers

Define one activation event per product. For a DEX it may be a qualified first trade, not any swap. For lending it may be a first meaningful collateralized position. Then measure cohorts over a time window that matches real use, not the chart that looks best.
Add the exclusions and risk view
Exclude protocol wallets, known operational flows, routers and obvious spam where appropriate. Keep entity attribution separate from raw wallets. Show concentration, incentive cohorts and net flows alongside the headline metric.
Growth compounds when the base broadens, deepens and returns. If every new cohort disappears when an incentive stops, acquisition has not yet become durable growth.
