Staff Data Engineer
Copper
Job Description
About Us
Copper's vision is a future where every home is electrified with abundant clean energy. Our mission is to make decarbonization accessible to everyone by selling electric home appliances that enrich their daily lives. We're reducing the cost of electrification by integrating batteries into household appliances, starting with the stove. Our work has been funded by the Department of Energy, in an effort to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and increase energy resilience with products that are high-performance, safe, intuitive, and robust. As we build our team and pursue our mission, we do it with a strong sense of our core values because it's not just what you do, it's how you do it. You'll see this in high-level decisions, how we run meetings, our day-to-day work, hiring, and our interactions with customers and the broader community.
The Role
At Copper, we're reinventing home appliances for an electrified future. Our flagship Charlie range pairs high-performance induction with integrated battery storage to make the switch from fossil fuels a no-brainer. We're a small, fast, collaborative team that ships, learns, and iterates quickly.
As our fleet grows, we're hiring a builder to own how data flows through the company — from the range in a customer's kitchen to the dashboards driving business decisions. You'll architect our fleet telemetry and time-series infrastructure, define and implement strategy for our business and CRM data, and build the pipelines and tools that turn product telemetry into actionable data. These systems underpin the diagnostic tools our customer team relies on for surfacing product performance data and demand-side grid support programs.
Responsibilities
- Own fleet telemetry and its data platform. Architect and scale our data models, streaming pipelines, and storage on AWS so internal fleet data products stay fast, reliable, highly available, and cost efficient as event volume grows.
- Build tools for proactive fleet health. Stand up reporting and analysis infrastructure that surfaces product issues early.
- Partner across Copper. Work with firmware, manufacturing, ops, and IT on device data, access, and infrastructure. Help with on-call as systems mature.
- Improve CRM integrations. Get our CRM and other third party services into shape so they're easily queryable for our support, sales, and operations teams.
- Increase team leverage with AI. Architect data flows and LLM-based tools that mechanize common workflows — e.g., product triage, anomaly flagging — across engineering, support, and product.
Requirements
- 8+ years building production data infrastructure, ideally at an IoT or hardware company — with strong design fundamentals across backend, event-driven distributed systems, and storage.
- Fluency in Python, SQL, and TypeScript
- Experience with time-series and warehousing (e.g., data modeling, retention, and query performance for fleet data), as well as streaming/ETL pipeline design.
- Hands-on experience with AWS data services (IoT Core, Kinesis Firehose, S3, Athena, Lambda, ElastiCache/Redis) and Infrastructure as Code (IaC: Terraform, AWS CDK)
- Experience building production-quality systems with an emphasis on reliability, automated testing, and long-term ownership.
- Ability to work across teams and disciplines, communicating clearly with engineers, operators, and non-technical stakeholders.
- Comfort operating in ambiguity, making pragmatic tradeoffs, and taking responsibility for outcomes rather than just individual tasks.
Nice to Have
- Domain knowledge in energy and battery-based IoT products
- Experience building and maintaining LLM-based tools and processes
- Experience integrating CRM systems
- Edge data architecture: data sync strategy for devices with intermittent network connectivity
- Working in an Agile/Scrum environment

This is an in-office role that is on site four days per week minimum. Our office is located in Berkeley, CA.
